What Happened?
Apple unveiled "Apple Intelligence" at its June 2024 developer conference, centered on a dramatically upgraded, AI-powered Siri that could understand on-screen content, take action across apps, and use personal context to answer questions. The lawsuit alleges Apple marketed these features as a key reason to buy the iPhone 16 lineup and certain iPhone 15 Pro models — even though the headline AI capabilities weren't actually available when the devices shipped, and some are still rolling out years later.
Apple denies any wrongdoing, maintaining its marketing was accurate because it disclosed that some capabilities would arrive over time, and that it has since shipped dozens of other Apple Intelligence features. The company agreed to the $250 million settlement "to stay focused on doing what we do best" rather than continue litigating, according to a company statement.
This case is notable for its scale: roughly 36–37 million eligible iPhones were sold during the affected window, making this one of the largest consumer tech false-advertising settlements ever reached.
