What Happened?

In 2018, it was revealed that Cambridge Analytica, a political consulting firm, had harvested the personal data of approximately 87 million Facebook users without their consent. The data was collected through a third-party quiz app and used to build detailed psychological profiles for political advertising — including during the 2016 U.S. presidential election.

Facebook (now Meta) knew about the data misuse as early as 2015 but failed to notify users or take action to retrieve the stolen data. The scandal triggered congressional hearings, a $5 billion FTC fine against Facebook, and multiple class action lawsuits. Facebook agreed to pay $725 million to settle the privacy class action — the largest privacy settlement in U.S. history at the time.

If you had a Facebook account at any point between May 24, 2007 and December 22, 2022, you are likely eligible. No proof is required.

How Much Will I Actually Get?

The $725 million fund sounds enormous but it is divided among potentially hundreds of millions of eligible users. Early estimates suggested payments of $2-$5 per person, but the actual amount depends on how many people filed valid claims. Payments have already begun distributing for early filers. If you haven't filed yet, check the official settlement website for current status.
