Google was sued after it was revealed that Google Assistant — the voice-activated AI on Android phones, Google Home devices, and other products — was recording private conversations without users' knowledge or consent. The recordings were made even when users had not said the "Hey Google" wake word, capturing sensitive personal conversations in homes and workplaces.
Google employed human contractors to listen to and transcribe these recordings, ostensibly to improve the AI's accuracy. Users were not informed that their conversations could be reviewed by human employees. The $68 million settlement covers anyone who used Google Assistant on any device between May 18, 2016 and January 19, 2024.
How Much Will I Actually Get?
Eligible claimants can receive between $2 and $56 depending on which Google Assistant devices they owned. Owning multiple qualifying devices increases your payment. The deadline is August 27, 2026 and no proof of purchase is required — just confirm which devices you owned during the qualifying period.
