Tuft & Needle, the direct-to-consumer mattress company, was sued for allegedly advertising mattresses at inflated "original" prices and then showing consumers a false discount — a practice known as reference price fraud or fake sale pricing. California consumers who purchased mattresses on TuftAndNeedle.com saw prices shown as deeply discounted from a higher original price, but the lawsuit alleged those original prices were not genuine prices at which the mattresses were ever regularly sold.
California has some of the strictest false advertising laws in the country, including specific prohibitions on reference pricing fraud. Tuft & Needle agreed to pay approximately $2.995 million to settle the class action. Attorneys' fees are paid separately so the per-class-member payment is not reduced.
How Much Will I Actually Get?
Eligible California buyers receive approximately $75 per mattress — calculated as 45% of the advertised discount on each qualifying purchase. To receive cash, you must file a claim form by July 14, 2026. If you do not file for cash, you automatically receive store credit instead with no deadline. This is California only.
