In July 2025, Pierce County Library System experienced a data breach affecting approximately 3,275 current and former employees, their family members, and current/former contractors. The library notified affected individuals in Washington and related class litigation followed. The library denies wrongdoing and agreed to settle.
The settlement provides a documented-loss path of up to $250 ordinary losses, up to $4,000 extraordinary documented losses, and up to $80 lost time (4 hours at $20/hour) — up to $4,330 combined per person — or a flat $70 alternative cash payment if no documented-loss claim is filed. Cash benefits are capped at $385,000 in the aggregate.
All class members may also elect 3 years of credit monitoring with $1 million identity theft insurance. Online claims require the Login ID and PIN from the settlement notice; a mail PDF form is also available.
Claims must be submitted online or postmarked by September 28, 2026 at piercecountylibrarydatasettlement.com/form/claim. Benefits distribute after final approval and resolution of any appeals.
