What Happened?

In September 2017, Equifax — one of the three major U.S. credit bureaus — disclosed that hackers had gained access to the personal information of approximately 147 million Americans. The breach exposed Social Security numbers, birth dates, addresses, driver's license numbers, and credit card numbers. It remains one of the largest data breaches in U.S. history.

Equifax had failed to patch a known security vulnerability in its software despite being warned months earlier. The company also waited six weeks after discovering the breach before notifying the public. Equifax agreed to pay at least $575 million — and up to $700 million — to settle with the FTC, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, and 50 U.S. states and territories.

How Much Will I Actually Get?

The settlement originally offered up to $125 cash per person, but because so many people filed claims, the cash option was reduced significantly. You may receive less than $10 in cash. The better option for most people is the free credit monitoring — four years of three-bureau credit monitoring valued at over $100 per year. If you have already enrolled in credit monitoring elsewhere, file for the cash option but set realistic expectations.
