SunTrust Bank — now Truist after its merger with BB&T — was sued for manipulating the order in which it processed debit card and ATM transactions to maximize overdraft fees charged to customers. The bank allegedly reordered transactions from largest to smallest rather than chronologically, causing customers to overdraw their accounts faster and incur multiple overdraft fees instead of just one.
This practice — known as high-to-low transaction reordering — was the subject of numerous lawsuits against major banks in the 2010s. SunTrust agreed to pay $240 million to settle the class action, one of the largest bank overdraft settlements in U.S. history.
How Much Will I Actually Get?
Eligible claimants can receive between $5 and $1,000 depending on how much they paid in overdraft fees during the qualifying period. You will need your SunTrust account information and documentation of the overdraft fees you were charged. This settlement is limited to Georgia residents only.
